Although both carbon and silicon are in Group 4A, very few Si=Si bonds are known. Account for the instability of silicon to silicon double bonds in general. (Hint: Compare the equivalent covalent radii of C and Si)
The covalent radius of C is 0.91 angstroms.
The covalent radius of Si is 1.11 angstroms.

Double bonds arise from p orbital interactions. Silicon is larger than carbon and so its p orbitals are further away (although larger), resulting in a poorer overlap (required to form a bond).
This poor overlap means that the bond won't be strong, and so it is weak (unstable)
Carbon is smaller and so its p orbitals are closer together and have a larger overlap, meaning it can form strong pi bonds and so C=C bonds are considerably more common than Si=Si bonds.
