Cheap Food in Las Vegas - Rules for Bellying-Up to the Buffet
Just because we're looking for cheap food in Las Vegas, doesn't mean we have to act like swine when we find it, usually at the cheapest buffets in Las Vegas. And sure, it's perfectly acceptable to act like you haven't had a hot meal in three years, it's even expected. But there are certain unspoken rules of buffet-engagement that should absolutely be followed, whether you're dining at the best buffet in Las Vegas or the most economical one:
1. Be patient. Many buffets have long lines, so you're just going to suck it up. That means you wait patiently if you arrived at the same time as four bus loads of seniors from a retirement center somewhere in Arizona and can't get a table right away. Don't send your smallest children to hover and stare longingly at diners digging into their 27th servings, hoping they'll give up dessert and leave. Life doesn't work that way.
If you can get some sort of hotel comp or VIP pass though, feel free to flash one of those at the host's desk.
2. Make several trips. This means that you should get up and refill as much as you want. Don't pile food on your first plate until it looks like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
3. Keep it clean. First, don't slop the rice pilaf into the tri-colored Jell-o mold when you're loading up at the cheapest buffets in Las Vegas. Nobody likes rice in their Jell-o.
4. Be patient again. Don't take your used plate back to the buffet tables for a refill, wait for your server to bring you a clean one. Because we don't want your used rice in our Jell-o either.
5. Use the tongs. We don't know where your fingers have been, and you don't know where ours were last night. This is Sin City, after all. And no amount of cheap food in Las Vegas is worth either of us lying awake wondering about each others fingers.
6. Don't test the sneeze guards. That's just gross. If you have to sneeze, sneeze into your shoulder or something, and try to be discreet. If it's a really messy sneeze that you covered with your hand, tissue or shoulder, get yourself to a restroom immediately. Don't put your plate down on the buffet table as you leave, that's also gross.
7. Be positive. Everyone's at the buffet because they're really hungry, they want to save money, or they're taking revenge on the casino for last night's losses on roulette. Disparaging remarks about macaroni salad might really tick some people off. No need to be excessively bubbly about macaroni salad either.
8. Dust off your manners. There's no need to be rude to the servers if they're not bringing you fresh plates every time you put your fork down. They're very busy people. There's also no need to talk with your mouth full or eat like you just got out of prison, hunched over your dish with your arms wrapped around it like a fence. There's plenty of food available for everyone, nobody's going to sneak up behind you to steal your last rib. We promise.
9. Don't ask for a to-go container. You won't get one, whether your at the cheapest buffets in Las Vegas or at the best buffet in Las Vegas. We promise.
10. Tip your servers. Anything from $2-5 should be great, unless you really ran the legs off of them. If that's the case you might want to spring for some artificial limbs. Again, they tend to be very busy people.
These are just some common sense tips for getting along at some of the best or cheapest buffets in Vegas. If you and everyone else follows these rules when bellying-up, you should have a great experience finding cheap food in Las Vegas.
